Ford Motor (F) is recalling nearly 32,000 recent-vintage pickup trucks and crossover vehicles in two separate actions to fix fuel leaks and electrical shorts that may lead to fires, according to a notice posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The largest of the twin recalls involves 23,688 Ford Ranger compact pickups from the 2010 model year. A cover that protects the vehicles’ fuel line near the throttle body shield may not been installed correctly, causing the fuel line to chafe and leading to a possible fuel leak and fire, Ford said in its filing.

The automaker said it wasn’t aware of any fires related to the problem. The Ranger pickups were manufactured in Ford’s Twin Cities Assembly plant in Minnesota from October 2009 through May 2010.

Separately, Ford advised NHTSA that it is recalling 8,022 vehicles from the 2011 model year spanning seven models to repair electrical systems that may short and result in a vehicle fire. Read full post…

A stabilization trend is taking place in commercial real estate sectors, but in most markets rent will remain soft except for multifamily rentals, according to the National Association of Realtors®.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said a pullback in construction is helping stabilize the market. “Very limited construction of new commercial real estate over the past few years has essentially fixed the supply of available space,” he said. “This means vacancy rates could fall quickly from any increase in demand for commercial space.”

From the first quarter of this year to the first quarter of 2012, NAR expects vacancy rates to decline 0.5 percentage point in the office sector, 1.3 points in industrial real estate, 0.1 point in the retail sector and 0.9 percentage point in the multifamily rental market.

“Even with declining vacancy rates, rents are not likely to turn positive in most markets until next year, outside of multifamily rental properties,” Yun said. For example,

In 2006, my husband and I bought a house in the center of Guanajuato, a city in Mexico’s Central Highlands, where we live about one-third of the year. We didn’t buy the house because it’s a cheaper place to live; we were motivated because we’d been visiting this town for five years and fell in love with it anew every time we came. Despite the fact that we live pretty simply in the States, it’s less expensive in Guanajuato. Here are some of the ways we save.

New financial watchdogs to have more responsibility

Posted by Sherry Barker On February - 24 - 2011 No Comments »

The planned changes to financial watchdogs in the UK when the Financial Services Authority (FSA) is replaced next year will mean greater powers for banning or limiting the distribution for up to a year of retail products and also warning investors regarding pending enforcement actions.

Mark Hoban, financial secretary to the Treasury, has stated that the planned Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), previously named the Consumer Protection and Markets Authority, will be strengthened by the changeover. The FCA will be allowed to reveal that it is about to penalise banks, brokers and individuals pre-emptively, prior to the target offering its case for internal appeal, and will hope to promote competition in the industry to help improve market efficiency and consumer confidence .

Mark Hoban commented “It is a radical reform but the lesson of the financial crisis is that you need to have proper focus and clear mandates and the mandates need to be underpinned by the powers to do the job.”

The Treasury are also thought to be reviewing whether to allow the FCA to be jointly responsible for internal competition inquiries along with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which previously had sole powers in this area.

The other major raft of changes involves the setting up of the Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA) and the Financial Policy Committee, with the former being charged with regulating individual banks and insurers . Read full post…

Embattled Toyota Motor (TM) is recalling nearly 2.2 million more cars to fix problems related to floor mats that can trap accelerator pedals and cause vehicles to accelerate uncontrollably. The massive new recall resolves a yearlong government investigation into whether Toyota recalled enough vehicles in its attempt to resolve the unintentional acceleration issue, The Detroit News notes.

This latest voluntary recall adds vehicles not included in previous callbacks “to address the potential for unsecured or incompatible floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal,” the automaker said Thursday in a written statement. Read full post…

Entrepreneur creates green bed bug spray

Fred Feldman likes to show how safe his bed bug treatment, Bed Bug Magic, is by spraying it on his hand and then licking it off.

“Most people go ‘eww,’ but I do it 90 percent of the time,” said Feldman, who sells the bug treatment as part of a line of environmentally-friendly cleaning products offered by his company Green Blaster. “(It shows that) it’s non-toxic, you can drink it and not have to have your stomach pumped.”

Feldman realized during the development of his other cleaning products that bed bugs are an epidemic and a solution was needed that was safe for kids (he has five grandchildren) and pets.

Bed bugs are an increasingly common problem found everywhere from retail stores to condos. The bugs are often brought in through furniture and clothing and like to hang out in places such as mattresses and couches. Pesticides ar

Cheap Travel: How To Get The Most For Your Travel Dollars

Travel has always been a priority for me. I love seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, and just getting away from the routines of my daily life. Even more important, my family and close friends are a pretty far-flung crowd. I have loved ones spread from Boston to Buenos Aires. We buy a lot of plane tickets in my family. We buy so many tickets that I should have become savvy about how we buy them much earlier than I did.

For years, I’ve mainly just flown with JetBlue. I use Farecast to see if there’s a better deal available elsewhere. If there’s not a significantly cheaper ticket on that site, I buy my ticket through JetBlue. They generally have low fares and a good frequent-flyer program. This is a pretty simplistic approach. Since I’d never researched it carefully, I didn’t know if I was really getting the best deals on my travel.

Now, my best friend is moving to San Francisco. (Yes, bet
