Cheniere Energy Sells to India

Posted by Lucille Pierce On December - 18 - 2011 No Comments »

India, meanwhile, has been watching its supply of natural gas slowly disappear.  The Asian nation has since been trying to find overseas suppliers from which to purchase the valuable resource.

But now GAIL India Ltd., India’s energy company, has made a 20-year deal with Cheniere Energy (NYSEAMEX: LNG) to receive natural gas.

In the deal, Reuters reports, Cheniere has agreed to supply 3.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to GAIL annually from its Louisiana plant at Sabine pass.

The deal is to take effect in 2017.

Cheniere previously struck deals with two other international companies—namely Gas Natural Fenosa of Spain and BG Group PLC of Britain.

The company has become the first U.S. company to export natural gas, CBS reports.

Other U.S. comp

Japanese Business Confidence Falls

Posted by Sherry Barker On December - 18 - 2011 No Comments »

The Tankan study is commissioned by the Bank of Japan on a quarterly basis. It takes the pulse of business sentiment expressing the outcome as the percentage of positive views minus the percentage of negative opinions. The index has fallen from plus two to minus four, indicating that the sentiment of large scale manufacturers has taken a turn for the worse. Japan exited a formal recession last quarter, largely on reconstruction efforts following March’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The effect of loss of confidence in the Euro and continuing concerns about the strength of the US economy has been that the Yen has been seen as a safe haven currency, pushing up its value and making Japanese exports less competitive in importing markets. As noted above, Japan has just emerged from recession and it is battling deflation. Its unemployment level is low by the standards of its competitors, but is high by Japanese standards. The population is aging which will send social security costs higher. J

What do I do if my MP is the Speaker?

Posted by Olen Phillips On December - 13 - 2011 No Comments »

I was slightly stumped by this question yesterday. I had tweeted asking people to take 2 minutes to write to their MP to encourage them to attend the financial education debate in the Commons this Thursday, on the back of the e-petition hitting 100,000 signatures.

This was one of the first replies I received and it got me thinking. For those who don’t know, the Speaker of the House of Commons is currently John Bercow, who is the presiding officer of the chamber, and a sitting MP. By convention the role is non-partisan and the Speaker never votes or takes sides in any debates.

While of course this is a good idea for the man having to referee our heavily adversarial system – where does it leave constituents? They have a Member of Parliament they can’t lobby or push to engage in politics, effectively disenfranchising them from big political activity. Of course

The Average Foreclosure Length: 631 Days!

Posted by Lucille Pierce On December - 8 - 2011 No Comments »

Saw this on CNBC.com this morning:

Foreclosures are setting new records again, this time not in their overall numbers, but in the time it is taking for all of these properties to be processed through the legal system. The average loan in foreclosure has now been delinquent a record 631 days, according to a new report from Florida-based Lender Processing Services.

Further along in the article (bold mine)…

…we are now beginning to see the effects of ineffective loan modifications. Repeat foreclosures made up nearly 45 percent of new foreclosures in October. Of the 2.1 million modifications since the start of 2008 more than 10 percent were in foreclosure with another 27.4 percent delinquent 30 or more days, as of the end of the third quarter of this year, according to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

This should not surprise any of us. I s
