Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s site is up, and seeking input

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureaus new Web site, consumerfinance.gov, was launched this week with some notable features:

  • Open for Suggestions. The CFPB wants your thoughts on which issues it should focus, from unfair credit-card fees to problems with credit reports to toxic mortgages and car loans. Youll find an area on the page to write comments, or to be directed to the CFPBs presence on Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. View Consumers Unions wish list here.
  • Get Help Now: Resources for consumers with complaints about financial services providers. Later this year, the CFPB hopes to launch a consumer response center to direct consumer complaints to the proper channels. In the meantime, the bureau provides a short, interactive worksheet to help you determine which state or federal agency to approach with your problem or question. As the CFPB notes, “Today, seven Federal agencies have authority to enforce more than a dozen Federal consumer protection laws relating to financial products and services. Various state agencies enforce additional state laws. For anyone who has a problem with a financial product or service, it can be difficult to determine which agency can best help.”
  • Learn about the Bureau. Ron Howard narrates an easy-to-grasp video explaining why the CFPB came into being, and what its designed to do.
  • Real stories. On the Protecting You page, youll find a short synoposis of the CFPBs mandate, plus stories from real Americans with problems of the sort the CFPB hopes to address. Share and read similar stories at Consumers Unions advocacy page, DefendYourDollars.org.
  • E.W. fan material. For those whove developed a crush on Elizabeth Warren, the interim head of the CFPB, the site features a video of the Harvard-Law-professor-turned-folk-hero soliciting consumer suggestions, her bio,and her monthly calendar (disappointingly, more than one month behind).
